When choosing a college, people look at the location, the cost and the quality of the education. What many don’t realize is that the school’s reputation is just as import as those things, perhaps more.
Back when few people went to college, simply having a degree was enough to impress an employer. Now more than a third of high school graduates go on to higher education. If you want to stand out from the masses, it helps to have a diploma from a famous school.
There are many reasons why some schools have better reputations than others. Some are older, or more expensive. Some have smaller classes and famous professors. The best indicator of the school’s reputation is how many people want to go there. The best schools are competitive because the number of applicants greatly exceeds the number of spots. Therefore, the school can be extra picky when it comes to selecting students. Schools with good reputations often turn away students with 4.0 GPAs and high SAT scores because everyone who applies there has a great GPA and high scores.
If you go to a school with a good, you’ll have an easier time finding a job. While it may not be fair, interviewers who went to good schools favor applicants who did the same. If they didn’t go to a school with a great reputation, they may even be impressed that you did.
When deciding where you’re going to spend four years of your life, it’s important to think about things like the size of dorm rooms, the quality of food, the frequency of college parties and the coolness of the frats. Just don’t forget to also consider the school’s reputation. It will serve you long after you’ve graduated.
